Review: No Offence – Series 1

With the second just starting to air on Channel 4, I thought I’d review the first season of No Offence, after binging my way through it this week. Get Channel 4 box sets ready, you are going to want to watch this one. Here we go!

Honestly, this show ticks off so many yes-boxes for me, I’m annoyed that I forgot to watch it sooner. Female-led: check. Gritty crime drama: check. City-based: check. Sound good so far? Well, add comedy to that as well, and it’s basically a perfect show, in my opinion.

Written by Paul Abbott (Shameless), the police procedural follows three detectives, DI Vivienne Deering (Joanna Scanlan), DC Dinah Kowalska (Elaine Cassidy) and DS Joy Freers (Alexandra Roach) and their colleagues, as they work cases via a Manchester station. Comedy: The Gift

I finally handed in my essay on stand-up for the comedy module of my course last Friday, so I thought it was good timing to post this piece I started writing about comedy, back in August, after seeing Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman live at London’s Apollo. Hope you enjoy!

Until this past August, seeing live comedy, in any form, was something I was interested in but had never had the courage to do. Not least because, well, going solo to most types of shows has basically become my┬ástyle. Sure, having company is fun, but when that’s not available I’ve learned that going to see my favourite live music or a new theatre production on my own is infinitely better than missing out. But also, planning for other people stresses me out, and I already have enough to worry about. But anyway, back to the matter at hand: comedy. Continue reading “Comedy: The Gift”

Hello!

So, here we go, I’ve made a blog.

Well, a new blog, which I’m planning on maintaining quite a bit better than the last one. I won’t go into details, but let’s just say, I don’t post there anymore.

Anyway, you might be wondering, who am I and why have I started this blog?

My name’s Leanne, and I like to write. Those are the bare-bones basics of it, the literal who and the why, but I can understand that you might want a little more info than that to give yourself a reason to stick around. So, if you want to know more about me, you can go to the aptly titled “About” page in the header, but for now, I want to tell you more about why I’ve set up this blog and what I hope to do with it.

There are many reasons I’m giving this another go, one being that I know I enjoy writing, I have ever since I was little, but honestly, I don’t often have the right motivation and inspiration to do so. I want this blog to be both of those things, driving me forward into the future.

Another is that I want to get better at it and to do so I’m setting myself a goal, week by week, to start a proper routine for writing. Just so you’re aware, in case you’d like to visit again when I have something new for you to read, I intend to post once a week on Sundays and/ Fridays.

Now, you may be thinking, “That’s great Leanne, good for you, but what are you actually going to write about?”

Well, I’ll tell you. Being a third-year Film and Video student and aspiring scriptwriter, I’ll be posting excerpts and drafts of scripts I’ve written or am working on, as well as film and television reviews and some general thoughts and opinions about the industries.

Besides film, I have many, many more interests such as theatre, travel, literature, etc. so expect to see some of that sprinkled throughout too.

Now, I think that pretty much covers everything I need to tell you in this first post, so, here we go.

Wish me luck.
